A Day in a Craftswoman's Life
 


I woke up early this morning to warm the leftovers from last night's dinner for my two boys, who both attend primary school. My first born stays in town right now, he needs to work and help me to pay primary school fees for the others. My husband was still snoring next to me when I woke up. He came late last night because he was out drinking, spending money on local beer in nearby bars.

After preparing breakfast for the children, I tied my youngest daughter to my back and asked my second daughter to help me bring some water from the lake. After filling the jerry cans we started climbing the hill back to our house with them on our heads. My second daughter hates climbing. It will be a lot easier for her when she starts attending secondary school, if we can afford it, and will get some shoes.

With my baby sleeping on my back I left for the field to do some digging before preparing the lunch. Later, after lunch I needed to finish a big laundry basket made from banana fibers, papyrus and rafia grass, because I got an order from one mzungu (white person). I'm glad that my grandmother taught me how to make some crafts. I can help pay school fees for my children by making them.
