 Did you know that almost all Ugandans have two first names and no family name? They use a traditional African name and a Christian one. And did you know that most children don't know the date of their own birthday? Even more interesting, they will give you different answers each time you ask them about the number of brothers and sisters they have! Families are extended and children just don't differentiate between siblings and cousins. Taking part in Edirisa Smiles is a special learning experience - it gives you a chance to get closer to an African culture, to a different lifestyle, a different set of values. Even when they are in town, painfully slow networks and frequent power cuts frustrate the Smiles Team. Our staff need to be very flexible and determined to deal with rural African realities - communication obstacles are just one of them.
