PROGRAM DETAILS Lake Bunyonyi - Mgahinga Itinerary Day 1: The Heart of Edirisa - Tom's Homestay We will sleep at The Heart of Edirisa at Lake Bunyonyi. At 10 in the morning, following a hearty breakfast, we will have a short paddle to the Kyabahinga peninsula for a singing and dancing presentation by the pupils of Edirisa Nursery School. At a trading centre above the school we will be invited to a cup of the local brew, obushera. The prize for our next activity, a relatively intense climb of about 30 minutes, will be pretty lake vistas and our guide's stories about culture and nature. ![]() On the ridge of the peninsula we will first meet Omugurusi Jeremiah, a traditional healer. After he shares his vast knowledge with us, we will continue to Ianick Mugasa. He is a son of the soil who returned from Europe to establish the Africa Explorer Cultural Village some 2,300 metres above sea level. Over lunch, Ianick can tell us many stories about the Bakiga, their traditional beliefs, Rastafarianism and much more. ![]() Ianick's place will have presented us some spectacular vistas - but we will look for more. Kyabahinga is uniquely located to give us an outlook over most of Lake Bunyonyi's 29 islands. We will hear some of the colourful tales, legends and historical facts related to these islands. ![]() In the afternoon we will descend to the water and enter the dugouts. We will paddle to Habukomi, the island of pelicans, where we will enjoy Tom's Homestay. By night a traditional musician will make your campfire more special. Day 2: Lake Bunyonyi - Lake Kayumbu ![]() By 8am we will be on our way to the other side of the lake and ascend towards the Echuya Forest Reserve, reaching it at midday. In Echuya we will experience something unique: a Batwa “Pygmy” guided nature trail. Our man will be Kanusu, an experienced guide who will tell us how Echuya was once their home and later became a source of all kinds of natural resources. ![]() Kanusu will show us different herbs, plants that make rain, gold digging sites and more. ![]() The crossing of the forest will take us about two hours. Our picnic lunch will happen above Lakes Kayumbu and Chahafi. The latter was once a colonial military outpost. In 1914 the English used 100 porters to carry a giant canoe from Chahafi to Lake Bunyonyi to attack the rebel leader Katuregye - perhaps using the trail we will be taking? Still, our destination will be the closer lake, Kayumbu, where we will camp on the shore. Day 3: Lake Kayumbu - Mgahinga Gorilla National Park ![]() Following lakeshore breakfast we will paddle across Lake Chahafi and walk towards Cyanika on the Rwanda border. Feel like some No Man's Land experience? ![]() We will then pay visit to a caldera and have a little picnic there. To reach Mgahinga's main gate, Ntebeko, we will hike next to the park's border, through a spectacular and lovingly cultivated landscape. Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp lies a couple of steps away from the park gate, and that is where your dinner will be served.
