| Overview of The Gardens | |
The Gardens of Edirisa, almost exactly on the equator, is a snack bar and a multimedia centre nestling in a cool forest. It lies just before the gates of Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi (Mpigi, central Uganda). Its close proximity to the university means that it is a place where students, locals and the staff of Studio Edirisa can mix together in a relaxed environment. Moreover, The Gardens is the official pickup location for volunteers on the way to The Heart and Teach Inn. The place was founded as "Eucalyptus Gardens" by Ambrose Kibuuka, Edirisa's co-founder. Our organisation took over in mid 2007. After a fire destroyed it in Novemeber 2007 it was rebuilt with the help of the United World College of the Adriatic, thanks to the funds by Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy). The studio interior was equipped with the help of DED. The architect of the building was Aljosa Ferk (Slovenia) and the builder a Peace Corps volunteer Bill Korp (USA) with his young apprentices from St Mbaaga (Bwama). The studio remake was led by Gregor Strehovec (Slovenia). This location is a great escape from the fast-paced capital city (80km away) with dorm accommodation from as little as USh 5,000. Families on a break can also take advantage of the kids' playground. There is a Barclays bank branch a minute away from The Gardens, together with an ATM machine.
