|Overview of Canoeing & Trekking on Lake Bunyonyi|
Lake Bunyonyi, "the place of many little birds", was formed 10,000 years ago when a river was dammed by lava and slowly made a water body 25km long and 7km wide, the biggest in southwestern Uganda. It is one of the safest lakes in Africa as it has no hippos or crocodiles. Bunyonyi is 44m deep and has 29 islands.
Since 2005 Edirisa has developed a variety of Bunyonyi activities:
2-hour Touch of Bunyonyi (from USD 15) shows you The Heart and the green paradise of Bushara Island.
5-hour Culture on the Crest (from USD 40) leads you to the peaks of Kyabahinga for superb views, a nursery, an herbalist, a Rasta investor and a craftmaker.
1-day Islands of Miracles (from USD 90) adds visits to three special islands to Culture on the Crest.
During 2-day Mama Bena's Bonus (from USD 180) you get to know all major islands, climb Karembe Hill, stay with the famous Mama Bena and meet Batwa "Pygmies".
3-day Mother of All Treks (from USD 230) adds Tom's Homestay and a morning with a craftmaker to 2-day Canoe Trek.
Accommodation is tented (upgrades available) and food is a mixture of traditional meals, fruits, picnic luxury and restaurant cuisine — details on the trip advice page. To find trip companions consult our list of upcoming treks. Our prices are all-inclusive.
