Long-term volunteering in Edirisa

For people who would like to experience Uganda more deeply, help Edirisa out and lead and assist short-term volunteers. The minimum stay is 6 months.

Where could I volunteer?
At The Heart of Edirisa, The Gardens of Edirisa or Teach Inn Uganda, doing any of the following activities: education, crafts or multimedia, tourism-related work, finances, human resource and other organisational duties.

Who would I work under?
The directors, a location manager or an activity coordinator (can be a local or international person).

How to apply?
Download the following information documents:
Why Edirisa?
Edirisa short term volunteer information
Edirisa long term volunteer information
How does Edirisa work?
Lake Bunyonyi & Kabale in your pocket
Edirisa Intermediate Plan - September 2009 revision

Read them thoroughly and fill in the on-line application (below).

We will get back to you within a week of your application and put you in contact with your nearest country representative. In case of any further questions or concerns please write to volunteer@edirisa.org.

Due to the nature of the work we do, all applicants have to submit a criminal record check before they are accepted. If you are a traveller and did not arrange for this before your departure, do not despair: you will be interviewed to ascertain if you are suitable to volunteer with us (we do not recommend this option - a prior application is advisable as we are often full).

What is expected of me?
That you are leadership material. You don't need to be an experienced manager or an MBA graduate but you must be a person who is not afraid of responsibility and challenges. We will give you one easy introductory month, and then load all kinds of responsibilities on your shoulders. We will strive to take your preferences into account, but that will not be possible every time.

You will become a manager, an assistant manager, director’s assistant or a project leader. You will get one free day per week, plus one free week for every month of work.

When can I start?
We expect long-term volunteers to arrive at our pickup (The Gardens, no matter what your destination is) place on these three dates:
• first Monday of February
• first Monday of July
• third Monday of September
Under special circumstances a different arrival time and place can be agreed on.

What is the cost?
1. All volunteers pay Edirisa 50 euros as a one-off administration fee.

2. 2-day orientation: 40 euros if done during Edirisa's scheduled orientation days (Wednesdays); 60 euros if done on other days.

This is a compulsory, useful and attractive activity that will introduce you to your location. It covers culture, the basics of the local language and sight seeing around Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi or Nkozi and Lake Victoria (depending on where you will be located). It includes accommodation, meals, transport and all fees.

As an alternative to 2-day orientation please also consider our Lake Mburo National Park trip (orientation included).

3. canoe trekking: 70 euros.

Canoe trekking is a great team-building exercise which combines hiking, canoeing, exploring and socialising. It includes accommodation, food, water, transport and all fees.

4. Your accommodation will be free, but you will have to cater for yourselves, buying and cooking your own food. You should budget for up to 60 euros a month for food, basic drinks and gas.

Why do we charge?
Years of experience have taught us that only a well-prepared and assisted volunteer can be a happy volunteer. Preparations take quite some time and resources, and they are done without any guarantee that the volunteer will be productive or stay with us for the agreed period of time.
If you don't have this money but have the skills that we need, you can try to apply as a specialist.

Why do we want you to enter on three set dates?
We want to create cycles of volunteers, this is best for team building and guarantees that we have volunteers at times when they are really needed.

What if these dates don’t suit me?
You can consider coming as a short term volunteer, travel before hand, or try to make alternative arrangements with us.

Are there any other options for long-term volunteers?
Edirisa is not a wealthy organisation (if it was, it would employ all of you and do away with long-term volunteering), but occasionally we do have paid job opportunities.

,I love the print but I was afraid of getting it dirty since I just toss my wallet in my bag and patent leather is pretty vulnerable to permanent stains. I ended up getting the leopard insolite and I love it! I'd say go for it if you love it! lv bags.
